A national data-privacy bill for consumers gained approval from a House subcommittee on Thursday. The bipartisan American Data Privacy and Protection Act next heads to the full Energy and Commerce Committee for a vote, though the legislation is likely to face a tough time there and in the Senate, privacy advocates warn. Rep. Frank Pallone, D., N.J., a sponsor of the bill, termed Thursday’s vote “a massive step forward.”
